Ten Questions Interview

AP1.  How did you get into voice acting and how did you land the role of Envy in the extremely popular Fullmetal Alchemist?

WP: I got into it because a friend of mine, (Cynthia Cranz) invited me to an audition...they were looking for a villain, Amick on Blue Gender. I had never done voice acting before. Cynthia plays Chi Chi on Dragon Ball Z, we were in a play together and she thought of me! I went in and auditioned for Blue Gender with Chris Sabot and that is when I got my first role as Amick and I have been with Funimation ever since.

AP2. How does it feel to play a villain and do you know what Envy’s body count is up too?

WP:  I LOVE Villains, they were also my favorites as a kid! I usually only play them due to my voice range...super low! To me they have always been more interesting. It is always fun to let out your frustrations in the booth and I would not trade it for a sappier part! "Just kidding". I love it and I hope others do too. My body count is something we should not talk about...It is a work in progress.

AP3. Is Envy a guy or girl? On the official FullMetal Alchemist site Envy’s is listed with no gender.

WP: Envy is neither...a man or women. It can be who ever it wants. Envy is a shape shifter and takes whatever form it needs to get the job done...its original form was a man. I get asked this a lot!

AP4. How long does it take to do a voice over for one episode of FMA?

WP. It takes as long as it takes...Just kidding. It really depends on how large your part is and how many lines and reacts you have in the episode. A typical episode for me would take around 2 hours.

AP5. Have you personally met any of the other voice actors from the FMA Movie?

WP. I have met and know almost the entire cast of FMA. I am very good friends with Gluttony, Chris Cason and Cynthia Cranz is my best friend. We talk everyday, several times usually. We all do see each other at cast functions and things of that nature. We don't record at the same time but we pass each other in the halls as we enter and exit the booth. Last month several of us went out to a haunted houses together. I really enjoy all of the people I work with and we all have a very good time together.

AP6. When not working, what can we find Wendy doing?

WP. When I am not working, .I am looking for more work! I am always trying to stay busy. I'm that kind of person, that is either running 90 miles an hour or in a catatonic state. (I love naps.) I try to stay busy with theatre and other forms of acting. I also love to spend time with friends relaxing and going out on the town - regular stuff.

AP7. Who are some of your favorite villains from movies &/or anime?

WP. I will have to stay with the classics and I am sure this will mark my age, but here goes:
1)Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty gets the #1 vote
2)Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmatians
   3)Ursula the Little Mermaid
Come on how can you not love villains that are mean to dogs and babies!  That is just plain ole cruel!

AP8. Right now, what music CD’s would we find in your CD player or maybe I should say what songs are on your MP3 player?

WP. MP3 (No CD player)  Imogen Heap; Frou Frou; Rickie Lee Jones; Sade; Shelleyan Orphan; Sting; Matson Belle and The Smiths (they never get old)

AP9: Who are your role models, personally and professionally?

WP:
Meryl Streep
My Parents (They have been supportive of me all of my life. They never said you shouldn't act...they always said I could do well and I guess I have.)
Anne Lynn Kettles (My acting coach)
Mike and Colleen (My directors)
Chris Sabot (My director)
Eric Vale (director)
All four of the directors have taught me so much and I can never thank Chris enough for giving me my first Job. Mike and Colleen gave me my best role (Envy) and Eric is always there to let me try new things. He probably takes the most risk with me on my vocal choices. (Eric is a director at Illumitoons, a new studio that I am  working at.)

AP10: Tell us something about Wendy Powell, which you would like the fans to know?

WP:   I never thought in a million years that I would be doing this kind of job. I always thought theatre and commercials would be about all that I would do. It has turned out to be the most enjoyable and rewarding job, it doesn't  feel like work! THE FANS MAKE IT SO MUCH FUN, I am sure that all of the voice actors that I know feel the same way...such a loyal group and so supportive. I am so thankful to all of them for letting me be Evil...it has saved me thousands of dollars on therapy and prescription drugs!  Thanks to everyone who has supported my evil efforts.
