Anime is an abbreviation of the Japanese word  (animēshon). Anime (pronounced an-nee-may or ah-nee-may) is, in simplest terms, Japanese animation. The word itself literally translates to "animation". In the West, people identify Japanese animation strictly as anime or "Japanimation". All other forms of animation are "cartoons".
